SPORTS TICKETS
For those who want to cash in oh high profit margins, your best bet is to be a season ticket holder to a sports team that you think has a good chance of making the playoffs. This is best for MLB teams as they are usually the easiest to get tickets for and they are always in high demand come playoff time.
The choice in seats I would suggest is to get the front row of any section that is available. This enables you upon posting up for sale the greatest chance to complete the sale. People love being up front even if it’s out in the outfield or something. This is the same for the NFL. Most football teams have season tickets that have waiting lists, and if so, you know automatically they are high in demand, so sign up! The Chicago Bears is the best option for it since you may not get season tickets, you are allowed to buy tickets before anyone else does on the public presale, which is huge profits! Other teams require PSL’s ( Private Seat License ) and you can use your own judgement on what team to buy for. Basketball and Hockey tickets are really only profitable in big city markets, Boston, NY, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Concentrate on these areas , buy tickets to rivalry games and you will do very well, For baseball , when tickets go onsale to the public, buy any tickets for Red Sox, NY Yankees, Chicago Cubs. The NY Mets will be in demand in 2009 but that is a short term fix, try to get season tickets for them and you should see 50% margins for the whole year.
Tampa Rays tickets are easy to get and my suggestion is to buy tickets on the visitors side ( 3rd Base ) because all the fans from Boston and NY will overpay to see them by the dugout. Tickets can be had for as little as $35 each and you can get over $100 each easily. Buy season tickets, and you won’t regret it as the Rays are built as a powerhouse for the next few years. They already made the World Series and since it’s a small stadium, the supply is short for a high demand event! you should clear 100% profits from all playoff games. Another team to get season tickets for may be the Baltimore Orioles as long as they are on the visitors side again , the same reason for the Rays tickets. Remeber with them though that they are a horrible team and won’t see the playoffs in the near future due to the powerhouse teams they are paired up with.
Ok so now for acutal onsale events such as concerts thru Ticketmaster or Livenation.
Lesson 1: Preparing for the moment when tickets go on sale
There are two kinds of ticket buyers: People who intend to attend the event, and people who intend to resell the tickets. Regardless of which heading you fall under, the following will help you to acquire the best possible tickets.
If you are buying tickets for an event and you intend to sell them, you should do some research to see what you should buy www.going2theshow.com is hands-down the best place to get the inside scoop on what tickets will net you a big profit, and which ones will leave you sitting high and dry. Just choose from their daily listings of free presale passwords, and choose the ones in RED. Those are the hot shows! The other ones in white are not worth it unless for personal taste.
Understand that preparation is key, and that knowledge is power. The more you know about a show and perfomer and the entire ticket ordering process, the easier it will be to get great seats.
Assuming that you just want a nice pair of tickets to see a band that you are interested in — read on
Planning for success – Do you know what you really want?
Before you sit down to buy tickets ask yourself some questions How many tickets do you need’? Do you want seats on the floor, or would the lower level of the venue be OK? What about mid or upper level seats, would you take them if they were the only seats left? What is your budget?
Many people wait patiently for tickets to go on sale sit in front of their computer and at 10:00 am (or whatever time the on sale or presale begins) and click for the Best Available tickets
This is a big mistake for those of you working within a budget as many times the best available seats are expensive floor seats and by the time you get in, you will get floor seats that are like 50 rows back, which leaves you looking at the show behind 49 sets of heads all at the same level as you. If you have been to a concert on the floor and at the back you might want to consider a lower level seat hopefully near the side of the stage. While Ticketmaster does not give you that level of precise control you can request seats in a specific price range area of the venue or a combination. By being specific when you search for tickets you can buy the ones that suite your budget and your location preference while ignoring overpriced seats. Now if you absolutely sure you know a show will sell out, let’s say Coldplay or U2, choose the cheapest seats available and buy the most usually is between 6 and 8.
Step I — Sit Down and Login
Be at your computer 10 to 15 minutes before the tickets are scheduled to go on sale. Watch carefully as the time zone can make a BIG difference in the on-sale time use your cell phone as a timing device as it usually is paired with the world’s atomic clock.
Load the event page. If you have not done so already, login to your Ticketmaster account.
Registering in advance, and logging in to your Ticketmaster account will save you time and frustration.
Just take my word for it, also with your Ticketmaster account have several types of credit cards available , have a Visa, AMEX and Mastercard as some events only take certain ones. Having a Citibank card is also great because they are the best providers in presales in the industry.
Step 2— Open your browsers
Ticketmaster will only allow you to have 1 open session per browser. Opening extra windows or tabs will give you plenty of trouble, and you may not be able to purchase anything or if you do it will buy tickets that you did not intend to. The best bet is to have 3 or 4 different types of browsers open and if possible use your desktop and a laptop next to each other. The types of browsers are Internet Explorer from Microsoft, Mozzilla’s Firefox, Apple’s Safari, and Google’s Chrome.
Make sure to only search for one event at a time in each browser. If you search for more than one event at the same time in the same browser, it will mess up your searches. You can search for one event in one browser and one event in another browser at the same time without a problem.
Step 3— Presale Passwords
The solution is simple: instead of opening up two windows, open 4 different browsers Very often this will work, sometimes it does not. I suggest you try BEFORE you purchase tickets to see if this will work for you.
If the tickets going on sale are part of a presale, you will need to obtain the Presale Password for the event. There is an entire Lesson on Presale Passwords, so for now I will assume that you already have the Presale Password. For a list of great sources of presale password information, check Lesson 6 of this article
Highlight the Presale Password with your mouse icon and press CTRL+ C to copy the password to the clipboard When the presale starts PASTE the password into the presale password box by pressing
CTRL + V
Step4-Ready Aim F5 ( refresh key)
Start refreshing the event page 1 minute before the on sale time Refresh by pressing the F5 key on your keyboard once every 5 10 seconds until the tickets become available, usually Mozilla firefox you have to right click to reload the page.
At about one minute or so before the scheduled presale time, start refreshing the page every 10 seconds or so. Don’t click like crazy or you will get yourself banned from Ticketmaster s site. Getting banned from Tickemaster’s website is only temporary so don’t fret, the banishment will go away in a day or two, and it will be only thru your DNS, so you can still take your laptop to a local wi-fi hotspot and purchase more tickets as long as you clear the cookies in your browser. Also make sure you open more than one Ticketmaster account as there is no limit on how many you can have. If you need free e-mail addresses you can get one for free at google, yahoo, msn/hotmail , America online (AIM) , GMX Mail, Zenbe, Inbox.com and many more.
Once the ticket selection boxes appear, enter the ticket requirements and click find, get the captcha entered as quickly as possible , here is a tip you don’t have to enter both words if they are hard to read, just enter the easier one to read which is usually in Bold and if it has numbers on it, just ignore it and enter the single word, by doing this, you beat out 90% of ticket buyers who are busy entering both words and having a hard time to read it, then entering it wrong, etc, It’s a huge advantage.
Once you see tickets you want buy them This might seem obvious but believe it or not many people second guess themselves at this point and wonder what else might be available If you like the tickets you see .Buy them !!!
Do not try again unless you are really unhappy with the seats. Many times the first set of tickets you pull for an event will be the best you will see during the initial rush. Also take into account if it’s a concert that may be close to a sellout but not, such as outdoor venues with Standing Room only / Lawn seating areas. Do not buy sections that are close to these areas, only get the first set of sections, usually like the 100’s if its the seats up front, more on that later. Go to www.going2theshow.com for venue information in ideas what are the hot areas for tickets!
REPEATED WARNING
If you refresh too many times, your IP address will be
blocked from Ticketmaster for a few minutes, which means that you could miss the opening minutes of the sale.
Lesson 2: Presales and public sales
What is a Presale?
A presale is a block of tickets that is sold before the tickets are available to the general public. Usually 5%-20% of tickets will be available. Sometimes the tickets available during the presale are excellent, while other times you may find that the only tickets available are hardly desirable.
What is a Presale Password?
The Presale Password is a word or special code that “unlocks” those tickets, giving you early access to tickets before the general public
Different Kinds of Presales and Passwords
There are several different types of Presale I will try to cover them all but as technology changes and promotional methods change, you can expect to see more.
INTERNET Presale
When viewing an event in Ticketmaster , on the right hand side you will see information about when tickets are scheduled to go on- sale.
An Internet Presale will have one or more passwords that will
work, giving you access to a block of tickets on the day and time
specified.
Radio Presale
A radio presale works exactly the same way, the password is
usually available to listeners of a local radio station that is promoting the concert. The password will be a word that unlocks a block of tickets.
It’s a great idea for you to sign up to as many radio stations e-mail lists as possible, and the best idea is to get them from the 8-10 largest cities in the country. The best stations are the Rock stations since those tickets sell better than most Top40 artists.
Just Google “ Rock Station and the City Name” and it will get you a pretty good list to choose from and it doesn’t hurt.
Fan-club Presale
There are two kinds of fan-club presale passwords: Generic and Unique.
When an artist wishes to give all members of their fan-club access to a block of tickets, sometimes a generic presale password will be e-mailed to members of their fan-club. In this case, the password will work for anyone, even if they are not a fan-club member.
In a Unique Password situation the password will be specific to each fan club member and could appear as a jumbled combination of letters and numbers Lately many fan club presale passwords are being sent out this way.
The good news is that many artists will allow you to join their fan club through Ticketmaster at the same time you are purchasing tickets. If you search for tickets without a password, you will be prompted to purchase a fan-club membership in order to receive tickets to the event. Most times you can see these tickets before you join the fan-club. However it is best and most economical to join the fan club before it goes on sale as this enables you to purchase 2 or 4 tickets with one membership, as opposed to thru Ticketmaster in which you will purchase a membership for each individual ticket. The fan club price is usually anywhere from $20-$40 which can easily be made up on the sale of the tickets. Plus you get bonuses like free songs, access to boards and free shirts, or gear.
The access to boards enables you to build a reputation as a provider of tickets and you can help them get it for a cheaper price than let’s say StubHub.com . This is due to taking their commission out of the equation and saving them 25% off the ticket price. Who wouldn’t want to do that?
iTunes Presale Password
The iTunes presale password is given to people who purchase a song or album on iTunes. These passwords are usually unique, and most of the time you will NOT find them online. If I where you just see before making any purchase of music just check iTunes out first for free codes, it will be worth your while.
For a long list of sources of presale information, check out Lesson 7
Lesson 3: Where to buy tickets
Ticketmaster sells tickets for most major events across the United States and Canada.
Telecharge sells tickets for most New York City Broadway and off-Broadway theater performances. Tickets.com sells tickets to smaller events.
If you cannot find the event on Ticketmaster or Tickets.com, try finding the website for the venue and looking for the events calendar to see if there is a link there. Some venues use their own ticket system and do not appear through Ticketmaster .
Lately a new site LIVENATION.COM has come to the fold and if they are the prime promoter to an event, you will have a better chance to get tickets, real good ones too! Since the first option for any concert goer is to head to Tickemaster for tickets, by the time they find out it’s the wrong site, it’s too late to purchase the tickets, always check livenation.com first.
In general purchasing tickets online is the quickest way to go about getting good seats however calling Ticketmaster or the box office of the venue directly can also yield very positive results.
Lesson 4: Getting through when the lines are busy
When tickets to a popular event go on sale at 10:00AM in the morning, you can expect busy signals and long wait-times to get through to your local Ticketmaster outlet.
Buying tickets online can work, or if you were lucky and got seats during a presale you may not have to contend with hoards of other buyers.
Sometimes there is no other choice you have to call Tickemaster
The single biggest piece of advice I can give you is this
Don’t call your local Ticketmaster outlet because everyone else is doing the same thing.
A popular artist had announced a summer tour and tickets were scheduled to go on sale Monday at 1000am EST
So at 950am EST I called a Ticketmaster in Delaware , because there is nothing going on there , no offense to Delaware resident’s. After pressing 0 a few times
line with a live operator I asked a few questions about another event that I had no interest in and was in the area that I called, then finally
asked what tickets were available for the show I really wanted by telling them a short story I was going to be in New York City on the particular date and was “wondering if they can get me tickets to the event I really wanted.
I was shocked and to my surprise when I was told that there were two available in the second row!
After I completed my purchase I checked online and found that there were no more seats available on the floor for that venue and not only that but half an hour later ALL the seats were sold out!
When calling out of state Just make sure that wherever you are calling it will be open at their local time and that there is nothing important going on sale in that state in which states like Maine, Delaware, South Carolina, West Virginia and the sort , you will do fine, since they are all EST outlets.
Lesson 5: Before you sell tickets.
After preparing and researching, you have just bought a pair of fantastic floor seats for a hot concert. You bought them online with Ticketmaster and you are already imagining the money you will make from your investment. Not so fast
Even if the artist is very popular, and the seats are in row 5, hold your horses and DO NOT LIST THE TICKETS FOR SALE YET!
Read this carefully: You won’t make a profit if you buy tickets to an unprofitable event. And you have to consider a lot of different things to determine if an event is profitable You should consider the event venue city event date artist popularity and much more
Most people getting started in the reselling business lose a pile of money by buying great tickets to unprofitable events.
IF YOU GET STUCK WITH TICKETS AND CANNOT SELL THEM, DO NOT PANIC’
Ticketmaster has an unofficial policy one set of tickets can be canceled by anyone. Anyone gets ONE FREEBIE Emphasis on ONE You may be able to cancel multiple sets but not too often, I once cancelled tickets to Avalanche playoff game a day before the game due to prices dropping like a brick because they where down 3 games to none and weren’t playing well. I gave them a story that we missed our plane and due to the snowstorm (lucky story) we weren’t going to make the game, and after 5 minutes on hold they came back and refuned all 8 of my tickets I had!
If you are constantly canceling tickets be warned that they can and WILL say NO Tickets are normally non refundable once purchased unless the event is canceled
To cancel tickets with Ticketmaster I suggest calling a week or two before the event and explaining that a family emergency has come up and you will be unable to attend and ask if there is anything they can do DO NOT BE RUDE Ticketmaster reps are underpaid ,overworked and mistreated by many people who call them. Be polite and firm (“I’m sure that there must be something you can do to help me” ) and you will get the option to return a set of tickets
See Appendix 2 for a list of Ticketmaster phone numbers
Lesson 6: Where to sell tickets
There are many places you can sell tickets. Some of you reading this will already have an idea or two about where event tickets can be sold. Many have asked me “What is the best place to sell my tickets”? The answer depends on what you are trying to sell, what the timing is, what kind of fees you are willing to pay, and the demand for the tickets.
# I StubHub.com
Listing your tickets is FREE. Totally, completely FREEI When the time comes to sell them though…. some will argue that StubHub.com charges huge fees (%15) to sell tickets, I feel it is worth pointing out that StubHub.com
only charges those fees WHEN tickets are sold. StubHub.com
takes care of the shipping, handling, billing, invoicing etc. Also keep in mind that a buyer also pays a 10% premium plus overnight shipping so the tickets that the purchaser is getting , is paying a hefty price. StubHub.com
has a policy of not adding any of your information on the tickets, or you will get banned, as they don’t want to lose repeat customers. The best thing to do is generate a list of the individuals you have sold to with their full address and keep them in a database. When you get a database that is big enough, like over 250 names or so, create some postcards with your information and let them know that you can provide great seats at 25% off StubHub.com
prices. They will remember you and you will get a customer base in due time.
I strongly recommend anyone getting started in this business sell their first few tickets on StubHub.com to get
a feel for how the market works.
#2 eBay
eBay is the largest market for reselling tickets, so there will be plenty of potential buyers. Auctions of in- demand tickets tend to generate tremendous interest, and can rapidly increase prices. It can be the fastest, and most profitable way to liquidate your inventory.
Now for the downside of eBay
First, since listings are auction-style, you must re-list your tickets if they don’t sell right away. Sometimes bidders don’t pay. You will be competing with many others who have the same type of tickets, and if the tickets are not in high demand, you may make little on your sales.
Other ways to sell your tickets
Classified Advertising
Advertising the week before a show in a local newspaper classified ad can be a VERY affordable way to sell your tickets. Rates will vary, and you will need to collect payment yourself, either through PayPal, or in person
an online classified advertising way which is free is
